High Performance

The National High Performance Program seeks to identify and train the top junior players in the country. Through a system of tryouts, athletes are selected to train and compete with the ultimate goal being the development of the USA Junior and USA Youth National Teams.

The Puget Sound Region will be holding it’s 5th annual High Performance Camp in the summer of 2009. Tryouts will be held at Fife HS on May 17 for the Select age division (players born in 1994 or later) & on May 16 for Youth age division (players born in 1992 or 1993).  The PSR High Performance Program is modeled after the National USA Volleyball High Performance Program. National HP Select A2 Camper

As in previous years, the top Select player at tryouts will attend the USAV High Performance Select A2 Camp at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. In 2008, this player was Madison Magee.

2008 Puget Sound Region High Performance Campers

The summer of 2008 marked the fourth year of the Puget Sound Region High Performance Program. Over 150 players attended the tryouts that were held in May. From this pool of athletes, players were chosen to attend the two different international age division camps that the region held in July. The Youth Camp also served the function of a tryout as 10 players were then chosen to represent the region at the USAV HP Championships held at the end of July in Tucson, Arizona.

USAV HIGH PERFORMANCE CHAMPIONSHIPS, TUCSON, AZ JULY 22-27, 2008

The Puget Sound High Performance Youth team returned home from the USAV HP Championships with a 5th place finish in the National Youth Division. The showcase event, held at the Tucson Convention Center in Tucson, Arizona, featured a total of 83 teams representing 5 different countries and 19 regions.

The National Youth Division contained a field of 16 teams representing 12 different USAV regions as well as Puerto Rico. Following a 1st place finish in the initial round of pool play, our team lost three very tough matches in the second round, but rebounded to win the Silver Division bracket and capture 5th place out of the 16 teams in the division.

As the scores below reflect, the matches were extremely competitive and our team fought hard in every one of them, twice coming back from 0-2 deficits to force a 5th game. The loss to the Badger Region, the eventual champion of the entire division, was the only loss that did not go five games. Iowa finished second in the event and we dropped a very close match to them, 11-15 in game five. The 4th place finisher in the division was IVA and once again we had a battle that lasted well over two hours with our team falling just short, 10-15 in game 5. The other loss in the tourney was avenged with a convincing victory over  Lakeshore in the match for 5th and 6th place.

In addition to the tournament in Arizona, upon our return home the PSR HP Youth team also played a match against Peru’s National Youth team. Since this was a “friendly” match, we played all 5 games. Although Peru won all the games, our team competed admirably and gave the Peruvians a very tough match. The scores were 18-25, 21-25, 23-25, 16-25, 9-15.
